Senior School | MT 2025 | Week 2

From David Glynn, Head of Senior School

Dear Parents,

I will use this newsletter throughout the year to keep you informed of activities, trips and other events that are happening around the College.  It is worth all parents bookmarking the news page of the website, as this is where you will see more detail and some photos of these items.

It was lovely to see all our pupils in school last week, particularly those in Shell and Lower Sixth who are starting the next stage in their educational journey.  The Lower Sixth seemed to be in particularly good spirits, perhaps as they are fresh from getting their IGCSE results, where over half of the year group gained 5 or more A* or A grades.  In assembly last Wednesday we recognised some of our pupils who achieved truly outstanding results and we are delighted to welcome them to our Medawar Scholars group.  I am sure you will join me in congratulating Zhi Yi, Ying Ying, Louis, Chris, Lara and Ashlee who all gained 9 or more A* or equivalent grades in their exams and move on to IB with the ambition to challenge for a place on the honours board by gaining 43 points or more.

Kicking Off the Year with a Splash of Colour: A Look Back at the MCM Colour Run

What better way to start the school year than with a burst of vibrant colour, laughter, and a lot of House spirit? On Friday, August 29th, Senior School did just that.

The energy was high as pupils and beaks gathered for the event. The Colour Run wasn’t just about athletic prowess; it was about bringing the entire community together. The mile was transformed into a colourful spectacle as participants were showered with brightly coloured powders, turning white shirts into works of art!

Each House showed its competitive, yet supportive, spirit. Whether it was cheering on a fellow House member or working together to create a human rainbow, the Colour Run fostered a strong sense of camaraderie and belonging. It was a perfect opportunity for both new and returning pupils to connect with their peers and Beaks in a relaxed setting.

One of the most impressive aspects of the event was its inclusivity. While the colour was a major highlight, no one was left out. Pupils who opted not to be covered in the paint, still played a crucial part by walking or running the mile with their respective Houses, ensuring everyone was involved. This meant that the day was a huge success for all, regardless of their interests or athletic abilities.

And for anyone wondering about the aftermath: while the roads were initially a vibrant testament to the event’s success, Mother Nature, with a series of very timely weekend downpours, graciously handled the clean-up!

Thank you to all the Lower Sixth Parents who attended the Information Evening on Wednesday, the slides are now available on the Parent Portal under Senior School Information > Events > Lower Sixth. We look forward to seeing many Shell parents at the Information Evening being held on 18th September, details of which will be sent out on Monday.

This week, over seventy pupils have registered their interest in taking part as performers, musicians, technicians, or puppeteers in the upcoming production of Little Shop of Horrors. It has been fantastic to see so many pupils challenge themselves by committing to such a large-scale project, which for some will take them out of their comfort zone. In the weeks and months ahead, they can look forward to fun-filled rehearsals, opportunities to make new friends, and the excitement culminating in three performances this November. We wish the cast and crew the very best of luck as they begin rehearsals next week.

A reminder to all parents to check the map at the bottom of this letter, which was published in last week’s newsletter.  This is to speed up pick-up and save you time, so please follow this process and encourage your children to be in the right place at the right time. Thank you in advance for your patience.

Yours sincerely,

David Glynn
