Design and Technology (DT) is a creatively driven course that enables pupils to transform ideas into reality. It is an applied science that teaches pupils skills and knowledge used widely by researchers, architects, designers, inventors and engineers.
At Marlborough College Malaysia, DT is delivered by specialist practitioners, in a superbly resourced centre. We have a growing collection of notable resources, such as 3D printers, laser cutters, a heat treatment room and a permanent exhibition space. Pupils work with a range of modern materials, tools, equipment and machines to produce models and prototypes that aim to solve problems.
By learning engineering, materials science and graphics theory through a practical, project based and inquiry led curriculum, DT pupils build a portfolio of evidence that can be used to impress Universities and future employers.
It is widely recognised that DT effectively supports the development of skills valued by Universities and employers, such as communication and research skills, project management, critical thinking skills and the ability to work in or lead a team. Such organisations also value the industrial context of learning and project work in DT, as it has a closer relationship to professional work than traditional classroom learning.
Many pupils choose to study DT at an examinable level to demonstrate creativity and practical skills, which can balance their Curriculum Vitae (CV) and show that they are well-rounded learners. Many choose to study the subject because it is exciting, stimulating and addresses global challenges for the next generation of engineers, such as sustainable production and responsible consumerism.
Our curriculum follows a carefully structured path that develops from Prep School into the Senior School and ultimately beyond into the outside world. All pupils are taught DT from Year 3 to Shell (Year 9, which is the first year of Senior School), from which point DT becomes an optional subject up to Upper 6. We currently offer Graphic Products or Resistant Materials IGCSE courses to Remove and Hundred (both with Cambridge exam board), and IB Diploma Programme in Sixth Form.
Design and Technology (DT) aims to promote skills and knowledge relating to engineering, architecture and design, whilst facilitating the enrichment and application of learning from the wider curriculum (particularly Maths and Science). Projects in DT support the development of analytical, problem solving and evaluative skills that contribute to the growth of all pupils, not just those interested in creativity and invention. Often considered an applied science, MCM has positioned the Prep DT studio and workshop alongside the Science department in the Cotton corridor.
Many people consider tools and materials to be at the centre of the DT curriculum, but in fact these elements are part of a much bigger collection of resources and strategies used in DT to develop robust learners who have an insight of life beyond the classroom.
At Prep School level, the DT curriculum has been divided into four areas; research, design, make and evaluate. This helps pupils and parents recognise progress and achievement in core aspects of the subject.
Based on the British Primary National Curriculum, the DT department has created engaging schemes of work for each year group that blend subject theory with exciting practical activities. Taught by a close-knit team of passionate, specialist Design and Technology Beaks from both the Prep and Senior schools, pupils at MCM benefit from a quality STEM education from seven years old. It is a challenging yet inspiring learning experience, helping learners progress from a foundation level through to the well-respected International Baccalaureate in Design and Technology.

Music is an important part of life at the College. It is an inclusive activity and an academic subject throughout all years of the College, delivering the expertise of practising professional musicians to hone the talents of the pupils from Reception to the Upper Sixth.
At Marlborough we believe that Music is a subject that is accessible to all, whatever age or standard a pupil may be. We believe that it is an aspect of College life that really matters:
“I would teach children Music, Physics, and Philosophy but most importantly Music, for the patterns in Music and all the Arts are the keys to learning” – Plato.
The aims of the Music department are to inspire, enrich, and nurture every pupil to fulfil their musical potential in a dynamic, vibrant and exciting environment. We wish to provide the opportunity and flexibility to allow the musicians of the future to discover and explore their potential and passions.
When pupils arrive in Shell (Year 9) they are given the freedom to explore all styles of music. This may be in the classroom or through the many enrichment activities that are on offer including choirs, orchestras, and chamber ensembles, both contemporary and more traditional.
Instrumental music lessons are offered on an individual and group basis by specialist instrumental teachers. We currently offer lessons on woodwind, brass and stringed orchestral instruments as well as more contemporary instruments such as the electric and bass guitars and the drum kit.
In academic Music we follow the Cambridge Examinations IGCSE syllabus up to the end of Hundred (Year 11). In the Sixth Form we offer Music at both Higher Level and Standard level for the IB. This is an excellent course and well suited to pupils who aspire to enter the Music industry, following the traditional route of performing, composing and/or conducting, as an academic, or following the more contemporary route in popular, game or film music.
The Music department in the Prep School plays a crucial part in each pupil’s development in their early academic career. Our aim is to stimulate and develop in our students a passion and love for Music. We do this by offering a curriculum designed to inspire and enrich their creativity and nurture individual musical talent. Our Music activities focus on creative self-expression, learning essential techniques, and developing ensemble skills. We provide a supportive, encouraging and challenging environment that enhances students’ confidence and fosters an atmosphere of trust, mutual respect, and cooperation.
Each year group receives one music lesson per week during which our students are exposed to a variety of musical opportunities through singing, listening, composing and performing. As well as their weekly individual instrumental lessons, our students are encouraged to join our extensive list of ensembles and choirs. We aim to celebrate our students’ achievements throughout the year through a wide range of performance opportunities. These include regular and informal events and end of term concerts.
With the help of a team of peripatetic musicians, we offer our pupils individual instrumental lessons on piano, strings, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Psychology is a subject that is exclusively offered at IB level, and one that is popular amongst pupils seeking a new challenge within their ‘Individuals and Societies’ option. The course content is focussed on an understanding of the biological, cognitive and sociocultural influences on human behaviour, and how they interact.
Psychology is a fascinating subject that explores human cognition and behaviour, helping us understand why individuals behave differently and how various factors—such as social, cultural, and genetic influences—shape our actions. Psychology seeks to describe, explain, predict, and change behaviour through observation, hypothesis testing, and inquiry. An understanding of these methods, alongside ethical considerations in research, is key to enabling critical thinking and evaluation of studies and qualities such as compassion, open-mindedness and a principled and caring approach are integral to studying the course.
Modern psychology has evolved beyond its traditionally Western focus, incorporating diverse perspectives, including those of women, minority ethnic communities, and Indigenous psychologies, to gain a more comprehensive understanding of human behaviour.
In the DP psychology course, students develop knowledge of psychological concepts, theories, and research methods while honing critical thinking skills. The course aims to foster psychological literacy rather than train psychologists, encouraging students to assess evidence, engage with evolving knowledge, and apply research methodologies to deepen their understanding. Students will complete 4 practicals during the course; developing understanding of Psychological research in a practical context while evaluating through critical lenses.
IB Psychology fosters an understanding of how psychological knowledge is generated, developed and applied, enabling pupils to achieve a greater understanding of themselves and appreciate the diversity of human behaviour.
