Dear Parents,
I will use this newsletter throughout the year to keep you informed of activities, trips and other events that are happening around the College. It is worthwhile bookmarking the news page of the website, as this is where you will see more detail and some photos of these items.
Hundred pupils will be committing a substantial part of their school holiday to revision before their final blast of lesson-based exam preparation in April. While we know every family’s school break will look slightly different, we hope the attached guides to revision hours, techniques and approaches will prove useful. Helpful websites for creating revision timetables to suit your family schedules include:
https://getrevising.co.uk/planner
https://www.dayjob.com/revision-timetable-771/
https://kognity.com/resources/ready-made-ibdp-igcse-exam-revision-planners/
The Flora smartphone app is also popular with students while they are revising, since it rewards them for not being distracted by their phones during revision sessions.
The school holiday offers a good chance for your children to try any new revision tools, methods and strategies so they are best placed to work effectively during exam leave which commences for Hundred pupils at 3.30pm on Thursday, 30th April. From Monday, 4th May Hundred pupils may use the Library for quiet independent study or arrange to meet with their subject teachers during their scheduled lesson times.
We wish all Hundred pupils well as they step up their revision and look forward to our final weeks of teaching them in the Summer Term.
On Tuesday, the Sustainability Team represented the college at the BMCC Student Sustainability and Leadership conference. They managed a booth about our upcoming Sustainability Summit and they also ran a workshop about global interdependence and values in society.
They also had workshops about electronics, The Gibbon Society, and marine mammals by MareCet. The students have shown real resilience standing up in front of their peers. They have proudly demonstrated our school values, encouraging conversation about important issues, compassion to the causes represented and companionship in their work with students from other schools. Well done Maria, Veronika and Jesse.
On Tuesday, our Lower Sixth IB Geographers enjoyed a fantastic field trip to Gunung Pulai, benefiting from perfect weather conditions; sunny skies and a gentle breeze. The primary purpose of the day was for students to gather data for their Internal Assessments (IA), focusing on how river characteristics change from upstream to downstream along the River Ayer Hitam.
Throughout the day, students worked diligently to measure river velocity, hydraulic radius, sediment size, slope gradient, water quality, and turbidity at six sites along the river. This hands-on experience was incredibly important in allowing students to transition their theoretical learning to practical application.
The trip also offered a chance to appreciate the local environment. After a fuelling lunch at the Treehouse Rainforest Cafe, the group hiked further upstream to the spectacular Gunung Pulai waterfall to collect data from their final three sites. To reward their hard work, students and staff alike enjoyed a refreshing dip in the waterfall pool after the hot hike up. The students were excellent throughout, demonstrating great independence and focus. It was a highly successful day that has given our Geographers a fantastic start to their coursework.
On Wednesday, a group of pupils and staff led us in an Easter Assembly that blended lighthearted celebration with a reflection on what this day means for Christians. Mr Venables opened the event by noting that while many associate the season with chocolate, it marks what over 2.6 billion people worldwide consider the most significant event in history: the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Mrs Clark shared some Easter traditions that are held in her family and more broadly in the UK such as eating Roast Lamb on Easter Sunday, before Koungyul and Seoyun led an “Easter Egg Hunt Quiz,” where pupils hunted for eggs and answered questions about traditions like Hot Cross Buns. There was a dramatic sketch written by and acted out by Joonseo and Aiden. Supported by MCs Arvi and Kevin, the performers brought the story of the empty tomb to life.
Mrs Venables, Niranjenna, and Molly explained the “Journey of Easter,” exploring the days of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. The assembly concluded with a performance of Amazing Grace by the Choir.
