Senior School | LT2026 | Week 3

From David Glynn, Head of Senior School

23rd January 2026

Dear Parents,

I will use this newsletter throughout the year to keep you informed of activities, trips and other events that are happening around the College.  It is worthwhile bookmarking the news page of the website, as this is where you will see more detail and some photos of these items.

This week began on a positive note at Marlborough College Malaysia. We were delighted to welcome Dr Thomas Roebuck, Associate Dean of Admissions for the Arts and Humanities at the University of East Anglia, who addressed our English Remove classes. Dr Roebuck delivered an inspiring and interactive workshop on creative writing, guiding pupils through key stages of the creative process, including close observation, free writing, and the development of themes and ideas. The session was particularly timely, coming at a point in the IGCSE English Language course where pupils are required to produce descriptive and narrative writing responses, and it provided both practical strategies and renewed confidence for tackling these important assessment tasks.

It has been an action-packed week in the Senior School, focusing heavily on our collective identity and our responsibility to the planet.

On Wednesday, the Senior Assembly began with a visual reminder of excellence, as the HM Award winners for this term were displayed to the hall, a testament to the achievements of pupils in every House. The energy in the room was then lifted by our music scholars, who brought a live band together to lead the school in a spirited musical singing opportunity.

Mr Treloar followed this with a reminder about the vital impact of community. He spoke about the layers of support that surround each pupil and identity from tutor groups and year groups to Houses and the collective College. He emphasised that this shared identity is crucial for forging a path beyond MCM and making a positive difference in the wider world as well as actions whilst a member of the College.

A special note of congratulations was directed at the Hundred, who were commended for the maturity and resilience they displayed while tackling their mock exams over the past week and a half. In addition, Outstanding Learner certificates from Pearson were awarded to Ying Ying, Louis, Lisa, Lara, Chris, Jesse, Avi and Siya in recognition of their achieving Grade 8 or above in all their 2025 EdExcel IGCSE examinations.

We were then privileged to welcome guest speaker Andrew Watson from SusEd, who is visiting from the UK to support the planning of the Sustainability Conference hosted by MCM this September. Speaking with passion about the history and caretaking of our planet, he challenged pupils to consider their role in its future direction.

Following this, the Sixth Form Committee leaders demonstrated how pupil voice is driving real change. They presented updates on various committees, each linked to a sustainability objective, including utilising waste cooking oil as fuel, removing single-use plastics from sports equipment, measuring and challenging energy consumption within the boarding houses.

Hot on the heels of the sustainability themes raised in Wednesday’s assembly, the College came together today for the Frugal Lunch. While a nutritious meal was served, the usual variety and choice were scaled back. The primary goal of this initiative is to reduce catering costs, with the savings going directly into our Outreach finances to fund partner charities and projects. Beyond fundraising, the event was an opportunity for us to show empathy with those less fortunate. It served as a meaningful reminder of the global issue of food poverty and how a simple meal can make a world of difference. Thank you to all pupils for participating today and helping to support our community and beyond.

Thank you to those Shell parents who joined the Online Parent Beak meetings yesterday. A reminder to Hundred parents that we have our Online Parent, Pupil, Beak meeting on Thursday, 5th February. The booking system will be open from Monday, 26th January.

Yours sincerely,

David Glynn
