This week’s Feature Friday highlights a conversation with our College Counsellor, Ms. Vaisnavi
Please state your full name and your position here at Marlborough College Malaysia.
Vaisnavi – College Counsellor.
Could you share a little about your background, family, hobbies, and anything else that’s important to you?
I grew up in Kuala Lumpur and have always enjoyed working with young people. It’s something that genuinely inspires me. Supporting students and watching them grow gives me a real sense of purpose. Family means a lot to me, and I try to carry that same sense of care and connection into my work. Outside of work, I love spending time with my family and friends, reading, travelling, cooking, and exploring nature trails with my dog, Jillebi. I find that being outdoors helps me slow down and recharge. I also enjoy discovering new places and learning about different cultures — it keeps me curious and open-minded, both personally and professionally.
Why Marlborough College Malaysia and why Malaysia?
I moved from Kuala Lumpur to join Marlborough College Malaysia. Whether it’s KL or Johor, Malaysia is home, just a different environment. MCM has made that experience even better by creating a place where I truly feel part of something special. What I love most about MCM is its warm, supportive community and how much it values each student as an individual.
Can you describe your experiences and achievements in your current/previous role?
I started my career as an EAL and SEN specialist, which gave me a strong foundation in supporting students with diverse needs. Over time, I found my passion in counselling and guiding students through their personal journeys. Seeing them grow in confidence and take the next step towards their future has been the most rewarding part of my work.
How does the College counselling system work at Marlborough College Malaysia?
At MCM, the College Counselling isn’t just about finding quick answers, it’s about understanding yourself better. It gives students a space to talk about their feelings, worries, or doubts in a safe and supportive environment. Through these conversations, students learn to recognise what affects their wellbeing, discover their strengths, and figure out how to manage challenges along the way. The goal is to help each student make thoughtful decisions about their personal growth.
Believe in the process and enjoy the journey. Every step, big or small, shapes who you become. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your body. Talking to someone about how you feel doesn’t make you weak, it shows strength and self-awareness. The more we open up, the more we help to break the stigma around mental health. And remember, you’re never alone; there’s always someone here to listen and support you.
