This week’s Feature Friday highlights a conversation with Mr Adam Abdul Malik about his role as Student Visa Affairs Manager
How long have you been working with Marlborough College?
This year, I will have been working at MCM for 10 years.
Could you tell us a little about yourself, including your background, family, hobbies, and anything else you’d like to share?
I was born and raised in Johor Bahru and have three brothers. I grew up living with my Grandma, who played a big role in shaping who I am today. During my school years, I enjoyed playing football, badminton, and bowling.
One of my favourite hobbies is travelling. I love exploring new cultures, experiencing different environments, and learning about history and geography. Travelling gives me a chance to reset, recharge, and see the world from a fresh perspective. It also helps me develop a deeper understanding of people and their cultures, which I find really valuable in both life and work.
I also have a passion for cooking. It’s something that runs in my family, and I learned a lot from my Grandma when she was still with us. Cooking is something I find calming and meditative — a chance to slow down and be present. It’s a ritual that connects generations, brings people together, and is such a meaningful way to share love and tradition with others.
What do you enjoy most about your role here?
Making people happy! Helping people in need is something I enjoy, especially when it involves family matters. I also enjoy boosting family morale, focusing on building positive interactions, and strengthening bonds. I always try to maintain positive customer relations by addressing problems head-on and implementing successful corrective actions.
What kind of support do you usually provide to international families?
I try to find the most effective way to resolve visa-related issues by providing guidance, particularly when families arrive or relocate to Malaysia and are not familiar with the laws and regulations, especially at the border. My priority is to understand their personal and family issues with the highest level of confidentiality for the purpose of submitting visa applications. I provide advice for them to understand the possibility of staying longer in Malaysia to ensure that their family can be together and not be separated.
Have there been any common challenges pupils or parents face with visas that we should be aware of?
A lack of understanding often makes people face challenges when it comes to the process, regulations and laws. Furthermore, communication barriers are commonly an issue for them when they are communicating with the authorities.
What do you think helps international pupils feel so at home at Marlborough College?
Communication is key for ensuring a welcoming and friendly environment. We try to make families feel at ease with us, particularly when they are moving to a school and area that they are not familiar with. We offer guidance on visas and make the transition as smooth as possible. We also try to foster a respectful environment where all voices are heard and encourage open dialogue about cultural differences, which is essential for creating a sense of belonging.
What advice do you give to new international families joining the School regarding visas?
Every family’s situation is unique so it’s crucial to consult trusted sources for advice when dealing with the authorities.
Is there anything you wish more families would ask or know about the visa process?
Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. We’ve got years of experience in handling visa-related matters and are here to support you every step of the way – you can count on us.
Anything else you would like to share with our community?
Be kind. Spread love everywhere you go. Be the reason someone smiles today.
