Feature Friday: Lottie O’Brien

This week’s Feature Friday highlights a conversation with our University and Careers Advisor and IA coordinator, Mrs. Lottie O’Brien

Please state your full name and your position here at Marlborough College Malaysia.

Lottie O’Brien – University and Careers Advisor and IA coordinator.

Could you share a little about your background, family, hobbies, and anything else that’s important to you?

I am here with my husband, Dan and daughters Elsie and Ada, who are both in the College.  I love crochet and crafting, and I make lots of my own jewellery. I follow the Chelsea Women’s football team, and last year, I went to all of their matches at Stamford Bridge. I have a love of history, and have done lots of research into soldiers from Swindon (my local area in the UK) who fought in the world wars. I have also traced my family tree back to the 1700s.  I love travelling and look forward to exploring more of Asia whilst in Malaysia.

Why Marlborough College Malaysia and why Malaysia?

We have travelled to Malaysia a couple of times before and love the country. I feel honoured to work at such a prestigious College. I am particularly excited to work at MCM because of its focus on developing the whole person and seeing education as a bigger idea than purely exam results. Working with employers for many years they emphasise the transferable skills they look for in young people and MCM allows for students to develop those in so many ways. I am very excited to be a part of Marlborough at this time, with its push for Sustainability, and I look forward to seeing how we can develop this at the College.

Can you describe your experiences and achievements in your current/previous role?

At my previous school, I was Head of Careers and was pleased to get us to a point of meeting all of the GATSBY benchmarks. I was also responsible for Global Learning and rolled out whole school Values and Skills, which were taught throughout the curriculum. I enjoy encouraging students to campaign and was proud to take students to Parliament and COP26 to talk about the Sustainable Development Goals.

I am really looking forward to getting to know everyone and I hope that I can encourage my students to look up; look up from their phones to critically consider what they are looking at, look up from their studies to consider their life beyond Marlborough, and look up from our community to understand the world beyond. I hope that I can help the students feel empowered to make a positive difference in the world.
