Feature Friday: James McDiarmid

This week’s Feature Friday highlights a conversation with our Head of Computer Science, James McDiarmid

Please state your full name and your position here at Marlborough College Malaysia.

James McDiarmid, Head of Computer Science

Could you share a little about your background, family, hobbies, and anything else that’s important to you?

I grew up in Zimbabwe, where I developed a love for the outdoors—camping, safari trips, and eventually wildlife and bird photography. After finishing school, I studied in South Africa, where I met my wife, Bronwyn; we got married in our final year of University. From there, life took us to Johannesburg, where I worked as a software engineer before moving into teaching and completing a postgraduate certificate in education. I later taught a range of subjects at Treverton in Mooi River before we moved to Malaysia to join Marlborough College Malaysia. Bronwyn came out first as Head of Prep Humanities, and I followed soon after, starting off with some digital skills support and programming activities before stepping into my current role in Computer Science. Family life is a big part of my story—I’ve got two little ones, Fraser (2) and Elanor (almost 1), both born here in Malaysia during our time here at MCM. As for hobbies, I enjoy golf, photography, and computer gaming —though with two young kids, those are a bit on the back burner! At the heart of it all, I’d say I value the outdoors, technology, sport, and simply making the most of each day.

Why Marlborough College Malaysia and why Malaysia?

Marlborough College Malaysia stood out to us because of its exceptional reputation, building on the strong traditions of MCUK. At the same time, Malaysia felt like the start of a great adventure—especially with my love for birding and photography, as the chance to explore such a rich variety of wildlife was too good to miss. In short, it was the perfect combination: an amazing school and an exciting new chapter. It certainly hasn’t disappointed, as we now find ourselves entering our eighth year here.

Can you describe your experiences and achievements in your current/previous role?

One of the highlights of my role has been launching Computer Science as a full subject in the Prep School, where I was closely involved in designing the curriculum. Over time, this strong foundation has contributed to success in the Senior School, with our students earning accolades three years in a row at GCSE, including “Top in the World” and “Top in Asia.” At IB level, we’ve celebrated achievements such as a perfect score of 45 points and that student gaining entry to Stanford to study Computer Science.

Do you have any new or exciting initiatives or events that you’re looking forward to this academic year?

More to come hopefully, I have some ideas that are in the pipeline so watch this space.

Is there a message you’d like to leave for the pupils, staff, or parents?

Make the most of every opportunity here. Marlborough College Malaysia is a truly special place—whether it’s stretching yourself academically, throwing yourself into sport on our incredible facilities, discovering new passions in the arts, or simply enjoying the friendships and community that make MCM unique. Take advantage of the breadth of opportunities, embrace the challenges, and don’t forget to have fun along the way. These experiences will stay with you long after your time here.
