James Armstrong, Upper Prep Teacher, English and Maths
Could you share a little about your background, family, hobbies, and anything else that’s important to you?
I come from Stratford-upon-Avon, the hometown of William Shakespeare, which has a rich cultural heritage. With 16 years of experience in education, I am delighted to be joining Marlborough College Malaysia. My wife, Nisha, is originally from Johor Bahru, and we are thrilled to be raising our young family here. Our daughter, Lara, will be joining the College this year, and we recently welcomed twins, Oliver and Arabella, into our lives. Outside of work, I enjoy playing cricket, football, and running regularly. I also have a deep love for the performing arts—especially attending the theatre, directing plays, and watching live music. My musical tastes are diverse, ranging from alternative rock and blues to Bollywood music and West End musicals. One of my favourite bands is Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro, and I have been fortunate to watch them live five times. I also adore South East Asian cuisine, with particular favourites including Nasi Kerabu, Laksa, and Hokkien Mee.
Why Marlborough College Malaysia and why Malaysia?
Marlborough College Malaysia’s emphasis on academic excellence, alongside sport and the arts, deeply resonates with my own values as an educator. I am thrilled to share my passion and expertise of English literature and Mathematics with my students and to foster a classroom environment where enquiry, imagination, and perseverance are celebrated. The sense of community here is one of the most important aspects, and I look forward to contributing to MCM’s dynamic, inclusive, and forward-thinking learning environment.
Can you describe your experiences and achievements in your current/previous role?
It is a privilege to join Marlborough College Malaysia as an Upper Prep Teacher of Maths and English. With 16 years of experience in British and international schools, including the past six years in Malaysian British international schools – including a boarding school setting – I bring with me a strong foundation in teaching, leadership, and curriculum development across a range of contexts. My educational philosophy is rooted in the belief that truly effective teaching begins with meaningful relationships and an environment where creativity and curiosity are encouraged. I am also particularly passionate about utilising digital technology into my teaching.
I am truly excited to be joining the Marlborough College Malaysia community. I look forward to building strong relationships with pupils, staff, and families and contributing positively to the school's continued success. Whether in the classroom, on the sports field, or through creative and performing arts, I am committed to supporting our students in becoming confident, compassionate, and curious learners—ready to thrive not only academically, but in all areas of life.
