This week, our adventurous Shell pupils embarked on an unforgettable journey into the wild, taking on their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award expedition.
The adventure began at Gunung Belamut, where the teams set up camp and the Vulpecula team finalised their essential field training. Before the hard work started, pupils enjoyed some well-deserved free time splashing in the crystal-clear mountain stream, a moment many highlighted as a favourite of their trip, and a wonderful opportunity for relaxed conversation and laughter, building the bonds of friendship.
The real test of independence began the next morning with an early wake-up call. Showing fantastic leadership, the students took complete ownership of their expedition, deciding for themselves when to depart, designing their own itinerary, and mapping out their break times. Once packed, they tackled the gruelling and technically demanding trek to the peak. Navigating steep ladders, scrambling up rope sections, and carrying their full packs through thick mud and sudden downpours, our pupils met every challenge head-on. Throughout the arduous climb, true compassion was on display as pupils looked out for one another, offering a helping hand or an encouraging word just when it was needed most.
Reaching the summit was a great achievement, made all the sweeter by the deep sense of companionship shared among the groups as they watched a spectacular sunset while settling down to cook their own supper. Meanwhile, showing incredible grit and stamina, three groups took on a separate, even longer route, digging deep to complete their trek and camp beside the beautiful Lata Tangga waterfall.
Following a night of well-earned rest, the pupils packed down camp and began the steep descent back to base. The rugged terrain turned the journey down into a thrilling challenge, with one pupil perfectly capturing the spirit of the trip by describing the muddy, slippery slopes they had to slide down as “nature’s playground”.
Reflecting on the journey on the way home, the pupils spoke warmly about how much they valued the uninterrupted time spent with their peers, and the immense pride they felt in discovering just how independent, capable, and supportive of one another they truly are.
Huge congratulations to all of the Shell pupils for embodying the true spirit of Marlborough College Malaysia throughout their expedition.
