We are proud to announce that Marlborough College Malaysia was named a Finalist in the prestigious BSA (Boarding Schools’ Association) Sustainability in Boarding Awards 2026.
This global recognition celebrates how embedding a sustainable outlook into day-to-day life remains a fundamental part of our boarding experience. We would like to give special recognition to Upper Sixth students: Olivier B, Maria M, and Oli B, who compiled and authored the award submission. Below are some of the eco-friendly initiatives highlighted in the submission:
Farm-to-Table & Waste Reduction: Through Barton Farm, boarders engage in sustainable food and farming activities. To tackle waste, boarding houses participate in food-saving competitions and “frugal lunches,” which reduce waste while raising funds for local charities. Leftover food waste is recycled into liquid compost for the farm, creating a true circular economy, while house snacks are delivered in reusable tubs to eliminate single-use plastics.
Energy-Efficient Renovations: Following recent updates to the Senior boys’ boarding houses, all old furniture was given a second life through donations to local schools and orphanages. The houses have been equipped with energy-efficient LED lighting, modern air conditioning, and solar panels. This term also sees the launch of our “energy competition,” utilising new smart meters to spark a friendly rivalry between houses to reduce electricity consumption.
Recycling & Biodiversity: Each house now runs a secondhand uniform store to extend the lifespan of school clothing, while unclaimed laundry is donated to the wider community. On campus, boarders utilise our rainwater-fed lake for outdoor learning and activities, where native plants have encouraged the return of local wildlife, including otters. Additionally, pupils are currently constructing a “green wall” using recycled plastic bottles as planters to further boost biodiversity.
