Year 1 | Pre Prep | 5-6 YearsPrep Year Group
In Year One, pupils continue to build on the fantastic start they had in Reception. Transitioning from the Early Years framework to the more rigorous National Curriculum provides pupils with new challenges to stretch and extend their knowledge, however hands-on, engaging and exploratory experiences still remain at the heart of our learning.
Our timetable provides a variety of opportunities for our young pupils, ranging from core subjects such as English, Mathematics and Science, to specialist subjects such as Art, Music, PE and Swimming. Helping our pupils grow as global citizens is also paramount in our international setting, and pupils can learn a variety of languages including Mandarin, Malay or Spanish. A typical days timetable is shown below.
Each half term we explore a new topic in Year One, such as Fantastic Flying Machines, In the Garden and Wonderful Weather. Our subjects link into our topic, and pupils take part in rich and meaningful activities to expand their understanding. Highlights from the year have included a rainforest walk, building toy boats and planting vegetables in the college farm, alongside trips to a Malaysian Cultural village and a local Forest School.
Alongside our learning, we also enjoy a wealth of whole-school activities, such as Sport’s Day, World Book Day, Nation’s Day and more. We love these special days and being part of the fantastic and diverse community here at Marlborough College Malaysia.
