Simon was educated at Lancaster Royal Grammar School, before studying Music Performance at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He went on to gain a Master’s degree in Music at Lancaster University before completing his PGCE at the University of Cambridge. He began his teaching career as a music teacher at the Modern English School, in Cairo, Egypt, which is where he met his wife Jenny, before becoming Director of Music at Tanglin Trust School in Singapore. In Singapore, Simon gained his National Professional Qualification for Headship through the National College of School Leadership. In 2008 the family returned to Scotland, where Simon assumed the post as Director of Music at Gordonstoun. In 2015, he was appointed Assistant Rector (Pastoral) at Dollar Academy and, subsequently, Deputy Rector and Head of Boarding in 2020. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, and alongside his career in education, Simon has been a concert pianist, an officer in the Royal Navy, a professional scuba diver and an ultra-marathon runner. He completed the infamous Marathon Des Sables, often regarded as ‘The Toughest Footrace in the World’, and his first visit to Malaysia was to play a piano concerto with the Kuala Lumpur Symphony orchestra. He also enjoys sailing, mountain biking and golf.

Simon’s wife, Jenny, is a class teacher at MCM, as part of the Accelerated English Programme. They have two children; Oli is at MCM and Chloe is currently studying Product Design Engineering in the UK.
