Admissions Procedure

Academic Year 2021 - 2022

The following is intended as a guideline for all prospective parents applying for a place at Marlborough College Malaysia during the 2022-2023 academic year.

If a January start is requested, and places are available, pupils for all year groups will be assessed in September/October. For April entry, pupils will be assessed as early in the year as possible.

 

Year of Entry

Once registered (completed Registration form submitted and Registration fee paid), pupils will be assessed for entry into their year group (according to our system) if places are available. For some year groups, this may be a competitive entry.

STEP 2 Visit

Register for a College Event or book an individual tour.

Open Days/Events – Parents are able to meet the Master and members of the Senior Management Team at various events throughout the year. Open day events held at the College will include introductory talks by the Master and Director of Admissions, followed by a tour of the College and an opportunity to visit a boarding house. Please see the register for an event. Online admissions events and assessments are also held for those families who are unable to travel.

Individual Tours – For families who are unable to attend one of our events, we would be delighted to welcome parents and their children to the campus to meet the Master and the Director of Admissions and have a tour of the College with one of the Admissions team.

Complete the following;

You will also need;

  • A recent passport photograph for each registered child
  • A copy of their most recent school report for each registered child
  • A copy of the photo page of their passport for each registered child
  • A copy of the NRIC (if Malaysian) for each registered child
  • A copy of an Educational Psychologist’s report, if applicable

Please note that we are unable to process an application until we are in receipt of all the documents and the registration fee. Please contact admissions@marlboroughcollege.my if you have any questions.

Registered candidates will be invited to attend an assessment at Marlborough College Malaysia at the following times:

Assessments dates (we can also assess throughout the year and remotely if necessary.)

Assessments for entry in August 2023 will be held in April 2022.

Throughout the Assessment and selection procedure we aim to ensure that we are consistent and fair to all candidates and that we offer places to those:

  • whose academic and other abilities match the standards expected by Marlborough College Malaysia.
  • who will benefit and make the most of the many opportunities on offer to them.
  • with the potential to contribute fully to, and gain from, life at Marlborough College Malaysia. For those living abroad who are unable to attend during the assessment week, alternative dates may be available; please contact the admissions@marlboroughcollege.my.

Assessment Process

Candidates will be asked to attend a morning of introduction and observation.
Candidates will be asked to bring something they can ‘Show and Tell’.

STEP 5 - Offer and Acceptance

Following Assessment, successful candidates will be offered places.  They may be placed on a Waiting List if demand for places in that year group is high. If there is movement on the lists we will be in touch to offer a firm place.

Parents of children who are offered a place will be asked to pay an acceptance fee and a refundable deposit of one term’s fees. The payment of the fees and deposit will guarantee a place in the school. An invoice for the first term’s fees will be sent to you and this is payable by the first day of term.

If there is a need to decide between two or more candidates who meet the Admissions requirements, the following preference factors will be taken into consideration:

  • Boarding or Day place
  • the applicant has a sibling at Marlborough College Malaysia
  • a close relative of the applicant (parent or grandparent) is a former pupil of Marlborough College
  • the applicant has specific talents, gifts or aptitudes
  • the applicant and family have visited the College
  • date of Registration (ie Registration fee payment)

The school is not obliged to state its reasons for not offering an applicant a place.

Please note that offered or accepted places will not be deferred to another year, ie your child will have to enter the process again.

Please read the Terms and Conditions, carefully. The refundable deposit is refunded in full provided one full term’s notice is given, in writing, to the Master.  Please see our Term Dates.

Please also note that one full term’s notice is required in writing for the Cancellation of an Accepted place.

All new pupils for August entry will be invited to an induction day on Monday 22rd August 2022.  Further information regarding the Houses and Induction will be sent prior to the start of term.

Candidates will be asked to complete a Maths and English paper. (15- 30 min)

Candidates will have two 10-minute interviews.

Candidates will sit a Cognitive Abilities Test (CAT).

Sixth Form: Lower Sixth (Year 12), Boarding recommended – please note that all Sixth Form pupils (Years 12 and 13) must attend Saturday morning lessons.

 

Boarding Options

Full Boarding is an option from Year 5 to Year 13.

Weekly boarding (Sunday to Friday) is an option from Year 5 to Year 11

Day boarding (3 x consecutive nights) is an option in Years 5 – Year 13.

For 6th Form we offer full and day boarding only. Please note a number of our places in school are designated for boarding only.

 

Learning Enrichment

We have limited facilities but will attempt to accommodate the needs of applicants who require learning enrichment. Prospective parents will be asked to provide a recent Educational Psychologist’s report for consideration by the Head of Learning Enrichment. All known learning support requirements must be declared, in full, at the time of registration. Failure to do so may jeopardise the potential application.

 

English

 We are a British international school and all applicants are expected to have a good working knowledge and conversational use of English, appropriate for their age, in order that they are able to access the curriculum. At our discretion, we may require your child to have a pre-assessment remote interview in order to test their level of spoken English. We would then decide if they should be invited to assessment.
