Senior School Science Department

The Senior School Science department at Marlborough College Malaysia aims to provide an environment where all pupils, are able to enjoy Science and scientific endeavour. The Science department has six fully equipped science laboratories in which the vast majority of our lessons take place. We aim to give our pupils the best opportunity to achieve examination success and prepare them for the next level, whilst promoting an atmosphere where pupils feel able to express themselves without the fear of failure.

All pupils start Edexcel IGCSE courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics at the beginning of the Shell year and, by the end of the Hundred year, pupils will have the opportunity to achieve IGCSE grades either in these three subjects as separate sciences, or in Double Award Science.

At IB Diploma level, we offer all three Sciences as well as the SEHS (Sports Health and exercise) course at both Higher and Standard levels. We and encourage investigation through enquiry, which is evident from the excellent IA mark achieved by our pupils and the culminating both in an internal assessment project in the individual sciences, and the Group 4 project, which is an interdisciplinary group project in which the process itself, rather than the product, is the aim. It is our aim to enrich these courses with trips and events whenever these become available.

The Science department has a team of highly motivated science teachers whose aim is to pass on their enthusiasm for the subject onto their pupils. Through the use of a wide range of resources and activities it is our hope that every student can become the best scientist that they can be.

Prep School Science Department

Science is regarded as one of the core subjects in the Prep School at Marlborough. The department comprises of four specialist teachers in Prep and all pupils have the majority of their lessons in laboratories. The pupils follow the Common Entrance syllabus at both 11+ and 13+.

Within the department we have developed our ‘Prep School Science Principles’, which we believe are crucial to the pupils’ success.

  • Pupils are inspired to explore science with increasing initiative and independence.
  • Enthusiastic teachers deliver lessons supported by relevant resources that meet the pupils’ needs.
  • Pupils are active learners with opportunities to explore and test their ideas through practical work.
  • Pupils’ natural curiosity is challenged by asking and answering questions.
  • Pupils make links between scientific facts and the world around them.
  • Pupils are making progress by setting and meeting targets.

To enhance the learning experience further pupils are involved in fieldwork outside the classroom and in various activities during the annual Science week, such as inter-house science competitions. The Science department has made links with a local school and pupils are involved in sharing their scientific skills with others. In September 2016 the department achieved the Silver Primary Science Quality Mark award by the Primary Science Teaching Trust in conjunction with the University of Hertfordshire. Marlborough is one of the first British overseas schools to be award with this mark.

Pre Prep Science Department

In the Pre Prep children are encouraged to develop a range of scientific knowledge and skills through a variety of experiments and investigations. The children take an active role in experiments and work collaboratively and independently. As their independent skills grow, children are encouraged to formulate their own scientific questions and appropriate strategies to answer them.
The teaching of Science takes place both inside and outside of the classroom. Our campus provides ample opportunities to further explore our topics, particularly materials and plants.

All of our topics aim to foster creativity and scientific thinking within the children. Through hands-on activities key scientific skills, such as questioning, analysing, observing, planning and reasoning are developed ensuring a smooth transition into the Preparatory School in Year 4.
