Economics and Business Studies
The basic economic problem states that people have unlimited wants and needs but limited resources with which to meet them. As a result, choices must be made regarding the allocation of scarce resources to meet the unlimited wants of people on our planet. This is the foundation of economic study and the driving force behind all we do in the Economic and Business Department at Marlborough College Malaysia.
An introductory course in Enterprise is offered for all Shell pupils. This provides pupils with an opportunity to undertake activities in Enterprise, Marketing and Economics. Activities have been designed and written to be engaging, challenging and multi-disciplinary. The tasks develop our pupils’ skills in terms of critical thinking, data analysis, group-work and project writing. They provide the pupils with an appreciation of Economics and Business in order to be able to make well-informed and rational judgements.
We currently offer the IGCSE Cambridge International Examinations in both Economics and Business Studies. At IB we offer economics and business and management, all offered at Higher and Standard Level in the IB Diploma Programme.
The department is made up of four dynamic beaks who have many years of experience teaching the IB Diploma Programme in Economics or Business Management. All members of the department are IB category 2 trained and each brings a unique perspective and background to the department.
Pupils are given opportunities to get involved in Business and Economics outside of the classroom. These include trips to Singapore to experience lectures on important economic topics, visits to local businesses and the student investor challenge. Local entrepreneurs are employed as guest speakers to provide insight and reflection on their own personal experiences.
