Hong Kong International Competition 2024

Three of our Prep School flautists were finalists in the highly competitive Hong Kong International Flute Competition held in Hong Kong recently.

Ava (Year 6), Eliter (Year 6) and Elizabeth (Year 4), who are all dedicated members of the MCM Prep School Orchestra, Choir and Concert Band, were selected from hundreds of participants, to compete in person in the Junior Solo Category (aged 11 and below). Elizabeth won the Second Prize and Ava won the Fourth Prize against more than 40 other finalists from across the world.

Ava and Elizabeth also competed in the Junior Duet Category (aged 12 and below). They played ‘Das klinget so herrlich’ from The Magic Flute by W.A. Mozart. Their performance won the hearts of the judges, and deservingly the First Prize.

Co-organised by Hong Kong Flute Association and Hong Kong Flute Academy, the 3rd Hong Kong International Flute Competition (HKIFC) was held from 1 May 2024 to 4 May 2024.

The competition provides a rare opportunity for gifted flautists from around the world to showcase their musicality and share their musical experiences. It also encourages cultural exchange and enhances the accessibility of flute repertoire.

HKIFC attracts hundreds of top young flautists from across the world including Europe, the United Kingdom, Russia, China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Australia. The panel of jurors was made of esteemed flautists including Paul Edmund-Davies, Shigenori Kudo, Vincent Lucas, and Michel Bellavance who also held one-on-one masterclasses during the competition.

Elizabeth also had the wonderful opportunity of attending a masterclass with Professor Michel Bellavance.
