Friday Activities Season 3 | Friday 1 March until Friday 14th June 2024

After a very positive Season 2 of Senior School Friday Co-Curricular Activities, we now move towards another exciting set of Activities for Season 3.

Season 3 Activities

Friday afternoon activities are designed to develop skills and interests in areas not normally covered by the main curriculum or sports. This is a wonderful chance for pupils to discover new interests or develop themselves in ones they already enjoy. Activities cover a variety of categories and are broken down into 2 periods, some are single and some run over a double period. Pupils will need to sign up for either a double period activity or two single period activities.

As Season 3 runs during the exam season, Upper Sixth pupils can opt out of activities and undertake private study in the Boarding Houses for boarders and the Library or the Betjeman Study rooms for day pupils. Hundred pupils should continue to do at least one single period activity, although they can opt for a private study session for one period if they wish.

Shell pupils have a programme of activities called: ‘Coming Out of Our Shell’ – this includes: climbing, watersports on the lake, orienteering, learning about the school Farm, and undertaking the International Award Bronze Level training programme – learning how to pitch tents and cook outdoors etc. They will also have the opportunity to select one or two other activities during the year, according to the rota.

The activities will be open for sign-up via a google form from 8:30 am on Tuesday, 20th February for Sixth Form and Wednesday, 21st February for everyone else. Tutors will be there to assist with the process. The sign up will close on Friday 23rd February at 08:30 am.

There are limited places for each activity, and selection will be on a first sign-up basis. However, in some cases, pupils have been pre-selected and invited for a particular activity; they will need to attend those sessions. Pupils will receive additional guidance for their choices from their Tutors.

“What Parents and Carers Need to Know about Persuasive Design Online”

For many companies who operate in the online space and social media sites make deliberate creative choices to keep people scrolling, reading, watching and clicking. This phenomenon is known as ‘persuasive design’. A study by the charity 5 Rights Foundation concluded that “…the brain’s response to rewards and punishments can be leveraged through persuasive design to keep children online.” This week’s guide focuses on helping to educate on the effects of persuasive design – and suggests ways to insulate from its influence.
