Prep Music Extravaganza 2023

The end of the Michaelmas term saw the Prep School singing us into Christmas with an extraordinary Music Extravaganza held on Thursday 14th December.

The afternoon started with our youngest pupils in the Pre-Prep School all performing in year groups. First on stage were Nursery and Reception who gave us an utterly adorable rendition of ‘Jingle Bells’ followed by the splendid Prep Choir. Next, Year 4 gave us a performance of ‘Greensleeves’ before the rest of the Pre-Prep year groups brought out the festive cheer by performing some well known Christmas songs including ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer’, ‘Christmas Time’ and even ‘I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas’.

There were lots of Santa hats and tinsel on display, and it was a joy to watch everyone joining in on the singing and dancing. The first section concluded with outstanding performances by the prep choir and orchestra performing “Lil’l Liza Jane” and Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, respectively.

After a brief interval, the second part began, involving pupils from Years 5 to 8.  The newly formed Prep Concert Band started off the second part with another version of ‘Jingle Bells’. Next, Year Five performed ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,’ before Year Six took the stage with an excellent performance of ‘Viva La Vida,’. The Junior Choir followed with another wonderful song, “Under the Sea.” Year Seven then performed “We Are the World.” Our newly formed Bunga Raya Ensemble made their debut with another rendition of Arcangelo Corelli’s “Pastorale: from Christmas Concerto” before Year Eight with an inspiring rendition of ‘Haya Haya Haya (Better Together)’.

It was a true celebration of our pupils’ musical abilities, with contemporary dance performances and traditional African drumming, giving our audience a comprehensive glimpse of what MCM has to offer. The Prep orchestra wrapped up the concert with another energetic performance of ‘Brazilian Sleigh Bell,’ which got the audience clapping.

The audience left feeling very festive having enjoyed the Prep School’s excellent performances. Thank you to the Prep Music Department for organising such an incredible event, as well as to all of our musicians and everyone who assisted in making ‘Music Extravaganza 2023’ a memorable way to end the term.
