Spotlight On: Prefects at MCM

There are many points upon which we should reflect as this academic year comes to an end, the departure of Master Stevens, spectacular Prize Days and celebration of the year gone by, however, one constant throughout this year and every other has been our Prefect Team. Prefects are a core aspect of life at MCM, and a great responsibility that every year, a select number of our Upper Sixth take on. The role of Prefects is to act as a pupil voice to the beaks and management of the College, as well as implementing Sixth Form initiatives, being excellent role models for pupils throughout the College and giving speeches at events.

Our Senior Prefect Team, made up of four, has delivered the final lecture in our 10th Anniversary Lecture Series on the last day of this academic year. A true testament to the value we place on our Prefects to deliver the last of our 10th Anniversary events, as they now leave the College as OMs.

“Serving as a Senior Prefect at Marlborough College Malaysia has been an extremely rewarding experience. To give back to a community that has given me so much over the past few years has been so profoundly meaningful, and the role has undoubtedly allowed me to grow into a more accountable, balanced and conscientious individual. I am most proud to have been a part of the successful implementation of Smart Casual Saturday, as with this new policy, Sixth Form pupils are able to experience a more relaxed environment on Saturdays, whilst gaining a better understanding of what they may be expected to wear in future workplaces.” – Sora, Senior Prefect (MH, 2018-2023)

“Being a Prefect opens the door to many opportunities. One particular event that I am most proud to be a part of is the 10th Anniversary Commemorative Plaque unveiling in the presence of Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah whom I have looked up to since I was very young. Not only did I get the chance to showcase my artwork to Her Majesty, but I also had the opportunity to escort the royal family to the Wykeham Hall, and have a conversation with Her Majesty. This once-in-a lifetime experience has absolutely honoured the Malaysian blood in me and fulfilled little Wafie’s dream, only possible by being a Senior Prefect”
– Wafie, Senior Prefect (HO, 2018 -2023)

“My role as Senior Prefect has been a tremendous privilege. The role has been instrumental in my development personally, allowing me to become a more organised, disciplined, and confident individual who now recognises the importance of strong role models and their ability to inspire and influence others. Upon reflection, my proudest achievement was delivering my speech on Nations Day, one of my favourite MCM traditions. As an international school, our foundation is built upon the diversity of our community, and to secure the privilege of getting to mark this occasion with a speech that celebrated this diversity was incredibly fulfilling.” – Oliver, Senior Prefect (SH, 2014 – 2023)

“Reflecting upon my time as a Senior Prefect at Marlborough College Malaysia, I can confidently say that it has been an immensely rewarding and transformative experience. Serving as a Prefect has provided me with valuable opportunities to develop my leadership skills, foster a sense of community, and contribute to the overall growth and well-being of the pupil body. Among the many memorable moments, there is one event that holds a special place in my heart, and that is the first lecture of our Tenth Anniversary series, where I had the honour of interviewing Y.A.M. Tunku Ali Redhauddin Ibni Tuanku Muhriz, the Chairman of Council and an Old Marlburian himself. Hosting this conversation allowed me to witness the abundance of wisdom Tunku Ali shared with our pupils, drawing from his prestigious education and life experiences.” – Kaitlyn, Senior Prefect (BU,2015 – 2023)
