KL Shakespeare Players Workshops

On the 7th and 8th March, the KL Shakespeare Players, an acting company that specialises in ‘demystifying’ Shakespeare, came to MCM to educate our pupils on the joys of Shakespeare. The company performed ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ for an audience of pupils, staff and parents, as well as a special performance for our Year 7 and 8 pupils.

However, the company began the week with a workshop for our Remove Literature pupils focusing on key elements of the play to aid them in their preparations for the IGCSE examination.

Performing ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, the KL Shakespeare Players deployed an innovative mixture of puppets, masks, music, storytelling and classical acting to bring the play to life. Before leaving MCM, the actors noted “The experience has been nothing short of wonderful from the moment we stepped on campus. The reason is manifestly clear: the school really does try to make real its caring culture.

Finally, Pre-Prep pupils were treated to a second interactive storytelling session from the company’s founder, Soon Heng Lim who entertained the children with exciting tales of the clever mouse-deer, Sang Kancil.

The Players’ visit offered a rare opportunity for pupils to enjoy professional, live theatre onsite, engage with Malaysian Folklore in a fresh and compelling way and experience the vitality of Shakespeare in its original form.

A brilliant note to end their visit on, and our pupils greatly benefited from the experience, truly bringing the play to life.
