House Challenge | Senior School

On Wednesday 8th June 2022, Marlborough College Malaysia hosted the House Challenge Final with the whole of the Senior School in attendance. The competition is loosely modelled on the UK quiz show University Challenge. Two teams are asked 30 questions each, with correct answers earning two points and wrong answers being handed over to the opposing team. The questions are selected so that they do not match the curriculum and are therefore a real test of pupils’ wider awareness of a range of eclectic topics.

This year saw Sheppard face off against Atlas House in the Wykeham Hall. Sheppard’s route to the final saw them defeat Wallace via a tiebreaker and Gaia in the semi-final. Meanwhile, the Atlas team vanquished Thompson in the quarter-final and Wallace in the semi-final.

Representing Atlas were Justin (captain), Eshaan, Roy, and Gabriel. Sheppard was represented by Theodore (captain), Jayden, Jonatas, and Joshua. Both teams had representatives from Shell to Lower Sixth, showing the breadth of knowledge and ability across the Senior School.

The final was a fascinating battle of wits with questions assessing their knowledge of 1950s dystopian novels, physicists born in 1901, and natural disasters referenced in Spongebob Squarepants. The score was incredibly tight, with Sheppard stealing a late one point lead but, ultimately, Atlas came out on top by a margin of 52 points to 51 on the very last question.
