Lunar New Year 2022 | FoMCM

On Friday the 28th January 2022, the Friends of Marlborough College Malaysia (FoMCM) organised some festive celebrations for the Prep School pupils. Lunar New Year will be celebrated on 1st February and this year will be the Year of the Water Tiger, of particular relevance for many of us living in Malaysia with its population composed of diverse ethnic backgrounds.

During the morning, fully vaccinated and tested FoMCM volunteers organised and hosted different types of physically distanced and fully masked activities for the pupils. This included a variety of games depending on the students’ ages. There was also lantern making, Dal Go Na tracing, and happiness knot-knitting, which are all traditional Lunar New Year activities.

One of the highlights was the packaged snacks that the FoMCM provided. These were all traditional snacks such as Fortune Cookies and Pineapple Tarts, which were a huge hit with the pupils who thoroughly enjoyed reading out their fortunes and puzzling over what they could mean.

The day was a huge success and the pupils were able to experience new traditions and also develop a better understanding of the significance of the Lunar New Year which is celebrated in most parts of Asia: China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam. It is always wonderful to see everyone in our Community joining together to celebrate cultural festivals that they may not traditionally have observed.

Thank you to the FoMCM for their amazing effort and we look forward to our next Lunar year celebrations.

Marlborough College Malaysia would like to wish everyone a Happy Lunar New Year and hopes that this year brings you good fortune, peace, and prosperity.
