2021 Lockdown Leavers

After a year of social events being curtailed in some form or another, we hoped we could say farewell to our Upper Sixth leavers and parents in person. Sadly, due to Covid related restrictions, this was not possible. Luckily, we are experts at making the most of the situation; and not to be beaten by circumstances, the ‘2021 Lockdown Leavers’ online party was the next best thing.

The event opened with heartfelt messages from the Master and Mr Eatough, who both reminded our Upper Sixth how proud we all are of the way they have handled the situation with such remarkable resilience, good humour and adaptability.

Without the black-tie formalities of the traditional Leavers’ Ball, a fancy dress hat competition was felt to be more appropriate to add a bit of spice to the grid of smiling faces who joined us from near and far. Karin and Aaron were the clear winners after a vote from their peers. Mr Arscott presented the 2021 CAS Awards, congratulations to everyone, especially to this year’s winners Hao Wen, Wessel, Joshua, Aaron, Sohana, Vincent and Freddie for each demonstrating what it takes to be a CAS champion.

There were two musical performances during the evening. Khai Ling performed a beautiful version of My Future by Billie Eilish with a tear-jerking rendition of Night Changes by One Direction, performed by Hao Wen on the piano, Aman on guitar, Danial, Rania and Aalia providing the vocals. Both performances were sublime.

No leavers’ event would be complete without a few words from the Head of Sixth Form and the Head of IB. Dr Tomlinson and I expressed our thoughts to the year group, with a particular focus on how impressed and proud we are of them for the remarkable way in which they have dealt with events and still managed to come out smiling at the end. Our headline event was the Lockdown Leavers Kahoot quiz from the Marlburian Committee. Featuring rounds like ‘Guess the Baby Beak and Sixth Former’, who knew that Mr Lennard was struck by lightning or that Nicole once modelled for the Singapore Zoo visitor’s map? Congratulations to Danial for winning the quiz by a very impressive margin.

We ended with our Senior Prefects, Hao Wen and Danial who encapsulated the feelings of all at the end of this extraordinary MCM journey. Our thanks to them for such special words.

It has been an enormous privilege working with these fine young people over the years. As we end this chapter of their lives at The College, we know we will, at the earliest opportunity, put on a very special reunion for the OMs in this group and look forward to keeping in touch with them into the future.
