Shena, Remove (Year 10) pupil and one of Marlborough College Malaysia’s academic scholars took an entrepreneurship course this Summer and subsequently was offered an internship for the remainder of the summer in Singapore. Here is Shena’s experience.
“Four months into isolation, I had decided that it was time to venture back out into the world and explore new ways to grow and improve myself as an individual. This past year has been one of great economic instability and uncertainty, which led me to become curious about business and finance during a time like this. Therefore, I decided to enrol myself onto a brief course regarding entrepreneurship and business ownership.
The week-long course, run by The Creative Square Company, was based in central Singapore. I was thrown together with fifteen other likeminded students and three instructors, all successful cofounders of numerous businesses between them. I was amazed at the strength of the connections that I had managed to form with not only the other students but the mentors as well.
Over the course of the week, we worked through various aspects of entrepreneurship such as conceptualisation, problem-solving, collaboration, teamwork, negotiation, to name just a few. My favourite part of the week was a simulation where we had to purchase materials in order to manufacture products to sell to consumers. Thinking outside of the box, my teammate and I decided to purchase the entirety of the supply for the most valuable resource and resell it at significantly higher rates to other business owners in order to make a profit. This rather unconventional approach led us to unrivalled success.
Towards the end of the week, we were given an opportunity to form our own enterprise and pitch our ideas to a panel of judges. Intriguingly enough, my ultimate takeaway from this aspect of entrepreneurship was to firstly, keep things simple and concise and to secondly, make a connection with your audience in order to give your pitch more depth and substantiality. At the end of the course, I was fortunate enough to have been offered an internship by my mentors.
This course was invaluable to me and the lessons that it provided me with arched far beyond the confines of business into areas that I believe are beneficial for every single individual to explore”.
