In this weeks episode of the ‘Conversation with’ series Pupils, Parents and Beaks listened to Jamie Lennard, Director of Sport speak with World Cup Netballer Fran Williams.
Fran currently plays for Wasps Netball in the Netball Superleague, where she predominately plays Goal Defence. Fran Williams gave a detailed account of her pathway into the game of Netball and also what life is like now that she is a sponsored athlete in the England Vitality Roses set up. Fran offers some really useful tips around preparing for pressure and handling expectation, as well as some specifics around defending the ‘D’ in Netball. Fran also reassured young female athletes about their opportunities to join the programme at a later age and why young female athletes potentially drop out of the sport.
Fran joined the England Set up shortly after the team won Gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2018. The weight of expectation to deliver at your own, home World Cup and how the team managed to bounce back from a semi-final knock out are all fascinating topics that are covered.
Next weeks conversation with Susannah Townsend (GB Olympic Hockey star), will be themed around her Hockey career to date and how to produce a team winning culture. Susannah is currently part of the most successful female sports team that GB has ever produced, as voted by BBC Sport. Susannah will share her journey to Olympic gold and also the many bumps along the way.
