MCM Triathlon 2019

The third year of the annual MCM Triathlon proved to be the most popular to date, with MCM forming the final leg of the Family Tri series, which was also hosted by EIS and RAS.  This helped grow the numbers, which this year saw 543 pupils, staff, parents as well as competitors from local schools and universities taking up the challenge of completing the ‘swim, bike and run’ course around the College grounds. It was excellent to see more individual competitors this year (288) whilst the team spirit of previous years was emulated with over 85 teams also registering.

We were blessed with perfect weather on the day, following the traditional pre-triathlon storm during the set-up day!  Due to the increased numbers, the start times were moved forward to 0700, so our first wave of U6 athletes had the pleasure of starting the proceedings shortly after dawn.  A quick swim across the pool was followed by a dash through transition to adorn a top and helmet and hop on to their bikes for a short loop around part of the Marlborough Mile, followed by a short run round another part of the mile and a sprint back through transition and within the blink of an eye, they had finished!  Within the first hour and a half we saw some fantastic achievements, whether completing or competing in the U6 – U12 categories – just under 200 individuals and 24 teams took part. As well as having huge amounts of encouragement and support from the army of volunteers and supportive parents, it confirmed how popular the event has become with our Prep School pupils.

After a short break in the proceedings, the Senior School and ‘big Kids’ (18+) races commenced, with the team format being more popular here.  One hundred brave and determined individuals signed up to provide some excellent racing and nearly 200 triathletes competed for over 60 teams.  It was great to see so many newbies in the Prep School races but kudos to the staff and parents who gave it a ‘Tri’, in ever increasingly hot conditions.

Congratulations to all those that competed and a special thank you to those that offered help and support, prior to the event and volunteered on the day. The event would not be possible without our volunteers, of whom there were 120 this year! We look forward to seeing you back in 2020 for the next MCM Triathlon.

Our event partners ‘113’ have shared nearly 300 pictures of the event on their Facebook page and the official results can also be found on the 113 triathlon website –
