On Thursday, 1st March, the Magic Academy visited Marlborough College for an exciting afternoon of coaching. The Magic Academy is made up of Russell Earnshaw (Ex England Performance and 7s coach) John Fletcher (Ex England U18 Performance coach) and Juan Gonzalez Mendia (England Pathway coach). All three coaches spent the afternoon coaching both the girls and boys in adaptive evasion games to promote challenging situations and develop our pupils’ game understanding and awareness. The use of ‘superpowers’ and individual tasks within the games, empowered the pupils to take more ownership and ultimately improved their decision making. After the pupil session, the staff were then put through their paces to develop a deeper understanding of performance coaching and develop more strategies to support our pupils’ athletic and game development. The initiative was hugely enriching for our staff and is another step forward in delivering high-quality sessions and experiences for our pupils in sport.
The Magic Academy finally hosted an evening for our parents, pupils and staff centring around developing creativity and championing positive behaviours and mentality in all aspects of life. The evening was very interactive, with open questions around how best to support talented pupils and what structure is need to support long term development in our pupils. The coaches also shared stories about current England rugby players that they had coached in the elite pathway and what their individual journey looked like in making it to an international level. The evening was a huge success and it is now great to see these new strategies implemented around the College with our pupils to support their needs and development.
