On Sunday 17th February, 42 young tennis players gathered on the first MCM Tennis Straits Tournament. Four teams competed, consisting of young athletes aged 9-17 from MCM, UWC Dover, UWC East and Stanford American International School.
Hats off to notable performances by 17U MCM tennis players, Freddie Patten and Hector Lim who were down 2-5 and fought back to win 6-5 against the experienced tandem of UWC Dover players. Both boys were undefeated on their 3 matches played during the tournament.
Marlborough College top 14U player in John Ascough also came back from being down 2-5 to winning the match 6-5. John finished with a 3-1 win-loss record. The 12U experienced it all, nosebleeds, delay of matches and some heartbreaking losses but the Marlborough 12U players fought hard in every match.
The 17U age group was the closest of all the categories. UWC East finished and won the tournament with 7 points, UWC Dover with 6 points and MCM finished third with 5 points.
The 14U won by Stanford American International School and the 12U was dominated by UWC Dover without losing a single match.
It was indeed an action packed Sunday with fierce competition in all matches. Players took part with enthusiasm and gusto, which was great to see considering the blistering heat. Awesome to see such support and sportsmanship among all the players making the whole event very enjoyable.
