This weekend we invited 40 teams to the Marlborough College Straits. The day was a huge success with Marlborough entering a record nine teams into the tournament.
Notable mentions should go the U16s who finished runners-up in the Cup after a fantastic performance in the semi-final, beating UWC East 2-1.
The 2nd team won the Bowl performing exceptionally well all day and the 1st team girls were unlucky not to win the Plate, in a tough final with an excellent defensive display. Finally, a special mention should go to the U14s who won The Straits Cup scoring 28 tries throughout the tournament.
The U12 tournament was a great success. The strong MCM Blues team made it through the group stage in first place and dominated the semi-final against SK Parit Bilal to reach the final. This game was against the other group winners, Tanglin, who won their tough semi-final against Tin House RC. This led to a classic encounter in the final – some great chances were missed alongside some touches, yet it went the way of TRC in a super spectacle. In the Plate competition, it was two Marlborough teams, the Reds and U11s, who made the final and they also delivered a nail-biting performance. The U11s scored first but the Reds used their experience to power through and take the silverware. The improvement in the rugby over the tournament was wonderful to see and the girls went home happy but tired.
The U10 tournament consisted of a five-team round robin. Early on it was clear that the Tanglin team was going to be very competitive, yet local sides of Gudang and Parit Bilal pushed them with some stunning running. The MCM teams were performing relatively well for their first time and made great progress throughout the tournament. By the end, however, Tanglin came through as winners and deservedly so.
