On Tuesday, 14 November, singers from the Prep School Treble Choir spent the morning at Calvary Victory Centre in Skudai as part of their MCM Outreach activity.
Calvary Victory Centre (CVC) is a specialist education and training centre that caters to individuals living with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Staff and volunteers at CVC run and lead lessons, vocational training and therapy sessions for learners with ASD.
Our group began with a visit to one of CVC’s activity rooms, where vocational skills are taught and we had the opportunity to meet some of their students. The Treble Choir presented a musical showcase to an audience of approximately twenty students and staff, before leading a music and drama workshop.
In the music segment of the workshop, we focused on the inclusion of different abilities and worked on percussive rhythms and sounds. Together, we created a looping rhythmic pattern to accompany a singer from CVC. The workshop was a wonderful opportunity for the young people from both schools to interact with each other and create new music.
For the drama segment, Miss Grinstead led some drama games and activities, one of which involved a mirroring exercise, where participants had to physically mirror each other’s moves without conveying any intent through speaking.
We are grateful to CVC for being such gracious hosts during our outreach visit and hope to be able to visit again. Our pupils certainly enjoyed their ice cream treat from the CVC cafe before making their way back to College.
