Boarders’ Trip to the Ballet

The Esplanade Theatre is one of Singapore’s leading performing arts venues featuring local and international performances. On Sunday 17th of March, after the Sunday Service, the Senior Girls from Honan House travelled to the Esplanade Theatre to watch the amazing ballet, Coppelia. Most of us had never seen a ballet before and we were very excited as we were familiar with the story and understood Coppelia to be one of the most famous ballets in the world.

Coppelia or “The Girl with Enamel Eyes” is a mime-ballet in two acts and three scenes. It is the story of a beautiful doll made by Dr. Coppellius because he is lonely. Coppelia looked so real that she attracted the attentions of a young man named Franz who was already engaged to be married to a girl called Swanilda.

This caused a great deal of confusion as Franz couldn’t see that Coppelia was actually a doll.

The Paris Opera performed the first performance of Coppelia on May 25, 1870. The original choreography was by Arthur Saint-Leon with music by Leo Delibes.

This was my first experience of a ballet performance. I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next time.
