Economics, Business Studies and Politics
The basic economic problem states that people have unlimited wants and needs but limited resources with which to meet them. As a result, choices must be made regarding the allocation of scarce resources to meet the unlimited wants of people on our planet. This is the foundation of economic study and the driving force behind all we do in the Economic and Business department at Marlborough College Malaysia.
An introductory economics course is offered for all Shell pupils. This is aimed to help pupils decide which courses to take at IGCSE. We currently offer the Cambridge International Examinations IGCSE Economics course to Remove and Hundred pupils, and from August 2017 the Business Studies IGCSE will be offered. At IB we have three courses Economics, Global Politics (from August 2017) and Business and Management, all offered at Higher and Standard Level in the IB Diploma Programme.
The department is made up of four dynamic beaks who have 18 years of combined experience teaching the IB Diploma Programme in economics or business management. All members of the department are IB category 2 trained and each brings a unique perspective and background to the department.
Pupils are given opportunities to get involved in business and economics outside of the classroom. These include trips to Singapore to experience lectures on important economic topics and the student investor challenge. The department is in the planning stages of creating business trips to firms in Singapore including Accenture and IKEA.
