Over the final week of term, our Upper Prep pupils ended the academic year with an ambitious musical project with the aim of putting on a showcase for their end-of-year celebration assembly. This was done under the guidance of workshop leader Filipe Sousa, who visited from London and was previously at MCM in January carrying out workshops for Years 7 and 8. Over the course of the year, every single pupil from Year 3 to Year 8 took part in creative music workshops where they were given the opportunity to work as a large ensemble and create music collaboratively.
This time round, Years 5 and 6 were given the opportunity to work with Filipe to create, write and rehearse their own music using structured composition techniques, giving pupils the chance to come up with their own musical material to perform onstage. The Prep School Orchestra was also involved throughout these week-long workshops, and it was a delight to see how far they have progressed in the space of a term-and-a-half. The Orchestra worked with Filipe on basic improvisational skills and ensemble skills, learning how to play music by ear and responding to improvisatory cues whilst performing live.
All their work was then arranged into a 20-minute long suite and performed at the start of the Upper Prep celebration assembly, delighting both beaks and pupils as we finished what has been an immensely busy year of music in the Prep School.
