Edward Chai – 3rd best Chess player in Johor

Marlborough College Malaysia was represented at the 14th Annual Johor Bahru Chess tournament by Alex Martin and Boris Pastukhov, in the Under 12 category and Edward Chai and Andrew Yeow from the Lower Sixth, who both played in the Adult category.

The Under 12 tournament was fiercely competitive with over 80 players. This was Alex’s first tournament and he found the first three games tough, but he came on strongly as he got used to the tournament style and won three of his last four games. Boris was defending his title from 2013 and started strongly with three wins out of three before the lunch break. By the end of Round 4 there were only four players still unbeaten, including Boris, but he lost his next game when his time ran out and eventually finished 9th.

The Adults’ competition matched the 30 best players from the Johor region. This was Andrew’s first tournament and he performed very well, certainly above his expectations, finishing in 20th place, with three wins. Edward was very upset to lose his second game to a mistake when in a winning position, but he came back strongly, winning four and drawing one of his last five games to end the competition on the top score of 5½ points with two other players. When the tie break was applied Edward finished 3rd, which is a remarkable performance in only his second Adult tournament.
