U19 Cross-Country friendly – Pasir Ris
Just as the week was coming to a close, the MCM U19 running team headed off campus for the East coast of Singapore, to compete in a friendly with over six rival schools. Pasir Ris provided an excellent location for the 5km run; much of the route was flat, shaded and the sea breeze did seem to reduce the level of humidity. Nonetheless, conditions were undoubtedly challenging, since temperatures soared above 30 degrees.
Nerves mounted on the start line as the MCM runners realised they were up against athletes with two, or more, years’ experience on them. However, once the hooter sounded all was clearly forgotten and the MCM team displayed great determination and athleticism.
The U19 boys produced 2 top 10 finishes. Anyalemma Igwe was outstanding in 4th place overall and Rory Tan achieved an admirable 9th place, despite suffering with a cold. All other runners produced highly respectable results and times. The 5km race certainly provided a valuable opportunity for the team to practice their pacing and I am looking forward to seeing them compete at future upcoming events.
